Funnybones by Janet & Allan Ahlberg
I was so excited to find a copy of Funnybones in a charity shop in the summer, it was one of the books that I had in the book corner of my first classroom and was very popular among the four and five year olds in my class. My daughter and I have read it several…
Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll & Sir John Tenniel
Alice in Wonderland is celebrating her 150th birthday this year and during the summer we visited RHS garden Harlow Carr which was celebrating with an Alice in Wonderland trail. We were given a booklet of trail activities and as well as completing puzzles and quizzes we counted the Queen of Hearts’ tarts at each activity station. The Alice in…
Learning with Mix It Up by Hervé Tullet
We love Hervé Tullet’s ‘Press Here‘ and ‘Mix It Up’ is a lot of fun too. It’s a great book to read but also provides an introduction to the three primary colours, the secondary colours that result from mixing them and shows how you can make colours lighter or darker.
Roald Dahl Day – Esio Trot by Roald Dahl & Quentin Blake
September 13th is Roald Dahl Day! We’ve just started reading Roald Dahl’s books, some of which I read as a child. We loved George’s Marvellous Medicine and have just enjoyed reading Esio Trot. I didn’t know this story although I knew that Esio Trot is tortoise spelled backwards.
Dogs don’t do Ballet by Anna Kemp & Sara Ogilvie
Biff is a small, plump pug with big dreams, he wants to be a ballerina but is met with the constant refrain ‘Dogs Don’t Do Ballet’.
Oliver and the Seawigs by Philip Reeve & Sarah McIntyre
Rambling Isles, shipwrecks, sarcastic seaweed, posh hairdos and nasty villains all add to the adventure in Oliver and the Seawigs. It’s a very amusing, action packed, first chapter book that would be perfect to pack for a seaside holiday.
The Moomin stories – Comet in Moominland by Tove Jansson
I read most of the Moomin books as a child (I wonder where those books are now!) and my daughter really enjoyed Comet in Moominland which is the second book about the Moomin family who live in a blue house in Moominvalley. The first Moomin story, The Moomins and The Great Flood, was first published in 1945 so,…

George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl & Quentin Blake
Our daughter giggled her way through George’s Marvellous Medicine which we read in a day as we enjoyed it so much. She’s now telling anybody who will listen about what happened to Grandma when she took the medicine and insisted that we recommend the book on Story Snug.
The Great Moon Confusion by Richard Byrne
After a visit to the Planetarium and an eclipse we had lots of questions about the moon. The Great Moon Confusion is a wonderful story which explains why it changes size.
