Fairy Tale Characters
Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf by Catherine Storr & Marjorie-Ann Watts
Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf, published in 1955, is the first book about Polly and her adventures with the Wolf who is determined to eat her. Catherine Storr originally wrote the stories to allay her daughter Polly’s fear of wolves. She then wrote a second book, Polly and the Wolf Again.

Making a fairytale inspired board game
It’s the time of year when we enjoy reading The Jolly Christmas Postman, doing Humpty Dumpty’s jigsaw, reading The Gingerbread Man’s annual and playing the hazardous board game that Little Red Riding Hood receives from Mr Wolf. After playing the game for what was at least the tenth time in a row we decided to make our own.…
Christmassy Picture Books
Are you reading any of your Christmassy picture books yet? We’ve read several new ones but have yet to get out our favourites from previous years. These are the books that we enjoyed reading last Christmas and include cats, rabbits, nursery rhyme and fairytale characters and an adorable big bear.
The Fairytale Hairdresser and Father Christmas by Abie Longstaff & Lauren Beard
We are huge fans of Kittie Lacey, The Fairytale Hairdresser, and love this Christmas story which includes the fairytale characters from the previous books.
The Jolly Christmas Postman by Janet and Allan Ahlberg
Despite the fact that more people are sending virtual Christmas cards and messages I still like to send real Christmas cards. The Jolly Christmas Postman also has lots to deliver on his snowy Christmas Eve round, the characters in the story are preparing for Christmas and some are already celebrating with sherry and mince pies.
The Jolly Postman (or Other People’s Letters) – Janet & Allan Ahlberg
Last week in an interview that I did for Readitdaddy’s blog one of the questions was “If you had to name one booky person as your complete and utter book idol (Writer, Illustrator, Publisher etc.) who would it be and why?”. I chose Janet and Allan Ahlberg as they have written several of my favourite picture…
The Fairytale Hairdresser and Cinderella – Abie Longstaff / Lauren Beard
The Fairytale Hairdresser and Cinderella is a great modern twist on a traditional fairy story. The inclusion of so many well known fairytale and nursery rhyme characters makes this a really great book for ‘people spotting’!
The Princess and the Peas by Caryl Hart & Sarah Warburton
A book that encourages a child to start eating vegetables is definitely a winner! I am guilty of trying to disguise vegetables in food (courgette and cocoa muffins actually taste really good!) but The Princess and the Peas encouraged my daughter to eat peas after a long time refusing to, now she’s also asking me to…
Each Peach Pear Plum by Janet and Allan Ahlberg
Each Peach Pear Plum is a book that I have loved ever since my teaching practice days and if you are looking for a first picture book story it is ideal for very young children (there are also cloth and board books). It is a very interactive book which invites the reader to ‘I spy’…
