My Family Tree Book by Catherine Bruzzone & Caroline Jayne Church
I have bought My Family Tree Book for several children as presents and my daughter has just received a copy from her grandparents. It is a beautifully illustrated activity book for children to record information about parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins and draw their own family tree.
I Am Otter by Sam Garton
We have been reading and enjoying Otter’s stories and musings on her blog for a while and we were very excited when we heard that (with Sam Garton’s help!) she has written a picture book, I Am Otter, which also includes her best friend Teddy and a patchwork Giraffe.
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy by Lynley Dodd
Booktrust are giving away a copy of Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy to every child starting school in the UK in 2014 /15. We have several Hairy Maclary stories, their bouncy rhythm makes them lovely to read aloud and the repetition is great for beginner readers. Hairy Maclary’s canine friends appear in several of the stories as does Scarface Claw, the…
The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson & Paul Howard
My teacher read The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark to my class when I was at school and earlier in the year I read it to my daughter for the first time. We’ve read it several times since, we both really enjoy the story and my daughter finds Plop’s conversations and adventures amusing.

They are wonderful stories to include in the literacy curriculum as they promote enjoyment of reading and writing –…

Roger Hargreaves celebrated his birthday on May 9th and with a birthday coming up in our house we have been reading two of our favourite Mr Men books, Little Miss Birthday and Mr. Birthday. My daughter loves the glittery covers and both stories make us laugh. They are reasonably priced and would make a great birthday…
Penguin by Polly Dunbar
Penguin, a lovely story about friendship, loyalty and toddler tantrums, includes characters that children can identify with. My daughter was very excited to find the German translation ‘Sag doch was!’ in the library, it’s great to read a well loved story in another language.
How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers
Happy 10th birthday to Oliver Jeffers’ first picture book How to Catch a Star!
Grow Your Own by Esther Hall
With the warmer weather our thoughts have turned to growing and planting fruit and vegetables. Grow Your Own ‘A yummy story about growing (and eating!) your own food’ is a great story for initiating discussion about how fruit and vegetables grow.
Meg’s Eggs by Helen Nicoll and Jan Pienkowski
I enjoyed reading the Meg and Mog stories as a child and had several in the book box in my first classroom. We recently inherited some of the books and now my daughter is enjoying them, she loves Meg’s spells as they never work quite as they should!
