George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl & Quentin Blake
Our daughter giggled her way through George’s Marvellous Medicine which we read in a day as we enjoyed it so much. She’s now telling anybody who will listen about what happened to Grandma when she took the medicine and insisted that we recommend the book on Story Snug.
Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White
I read Charlotte’s Web as a child but had forgotten the story and how it ends. It was lovely to read it again with my daughter who enjoyed hearing about Wilbur, the pig, Charlotte, the spider, and our favourite character, Templeton, the rat.

Learning with Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler
Room in the Broom is one of my daughter’s favourite Julia Donaldson / Axel Scheffler stories. As well as witch, cat, dog, frog and bird crafts there are many other learning activities that can be inspired by the book. We had a great time crafting, experimenting, painting and baking to prepare this post.

I have compiled a list of some of the picture books that I have used to introduce English vocabulary to non native English speaking children.

The first story is still my favourite and I have used it countless times to promote learning within a variety of topics. It is particularly…
Audio books for long journeys
Audio books are a great way of passing the time on a long journey. Lots of our favourite picture books have great accompanying CDs so if you are looking for in car or in flight entertainment here are some that we really like. There are so many more that we could have included, we’d love to hear which…
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy by Lynley Dodd
Booktrust are giving away a copy of Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy to every child starting school in the UK in 2014 /15. We have several Hairy Maclary stories, their bouncy rhythm makes them lovely to read aloud and the repetition is great for beginner readers.
