The Street Where Santa Lives - Story Snug

The Street Where Santa Lives by Harriet Howe & Julia Christians

The Street Where Santa Lives is a heartwarming seasonal celebration of community and caring. A little girl’s determination to prove that her new neighbour is Santa brings her street together ‘for the perfect Christmas’.

The Story: A little girl is convinced that the old man who has moved into her street is Santa. Everybody else is too busy to notice him but he has a white beard and is good at mending things so it stands to reason he must be Santa. Right? But as Christmas approaches ‘Santa’ disappears. He’s obviously really busy with work at this time of year…

The magic of Christmas, one little girl’s imagination and a caring community intertwine in this cleverly written story which shows that first impressions based on stereotypes can be misleading. The little girl questions ‘Santa’ about his favourite things and is surprised by his very un Christmassy answers – rabbits? Not reindeer? He’s happy to help her fix her bicycle bell then opens his workshop to neighbours who need things repairing. But just before Christmas he disappears and the little girl discovers he’s sick. Determined to help the man who has helped everybody else she spreads the word about ‘Santa’s’ predicament. And nobody is too busy to help.

Told from the little girl’s point of view this magical story includes boldly coloured illustrations and a diverse group of characters. There are Christmas details to spot throughout the story – the old man wears a Christmas jumper, Christmas socks and has various Christmas items in his workshop.

This heartwarming read can be enjoyed all year round. The focus is less on Christmas and more on cultivating a caring community. We love the way that the inter generational relationship between the little girl and the old man develops with her determination to befriend him and the simplicity of the activities that they enjoy together.

Oh my, this story grabbed my attention. It really teaches children and adults to not judge based on first impressions which is hard to do. I love everyone helped the gentleman. #MMBC
