Three Horrid Pigs is a humorous fractured fairytale which features a friendly wolf builder who tries to help when the pigs attempt to build new houses. It cleverly turns the original story on its head by recreating the pigs as villains.
The Story: Mother has had enough of her three horrid pigs and sends them out to make their way into the world. The pigs attempt to make houses out of straw, twigs and a chicken shed and rebuff the friendly wolf builder who tries to help them when things go wrong. But their attempt to take over the wolf’s house leads to unexpected consequences…
We really enjoyed reading this twisted version of the original three little pigs. The lazy pigs’ antics made us laugh, especially the third pig’s attempt to move into a chicken coop! The chickens definitely weren’t happy but the wolf found a way to help them too. We really empathised with the wolf character whose patience and kindness leads to a life change for the pesky pigs.
The illustrations are full of humour and we love the speech bubbles. The animals are adorable and there is lots to discuss in the pictures. Young children could count the chickens and the cows as well as talk about their reactions to the pigs’ behaviour.

Three Horrid Pigs could be included in a nursery or Key Stage 1 fairytale topic, children could substitute their own characters into traditional stories to create their own fractured fairytales. They could also rewrite their own versions of the three little pigs with their favourite animals.
