The Farm and Numbers are two picture books in a collection that introduces young readers to everyday situations and vocabulary. Simple text accompanies vibrant vintage illustrations which provide scope for discussion and learning.
The Farm

Aunt Helen and Uncle Henry have invited Max and Mary to visit their farm. During their stay we learn about different types of crops and how they are grown, fruit and vegetables and we meet the birds and animals that live on the farm.
We learn all about where food comes from, are introduced to the roles that different birds and animals play and are shown how wheat is harvested and used to make bread and other foodstuffs. The way that fruit and vegetables are planted, harvested and stored also leads to learning about food that’s grown underground and food that grows on trees. Various vehicles and machines are also introduced to explain different farming processes.
Mini quizzes consolidate learning and understanding about farming and we love the way that the illustrations are labelled for beginner readers.

Numbers
Maths is made fun as counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, odd and even numbers and shapes are introduced in a fun and engaging way. A quiz at the end of the book helps to consolidate a child’s learning.

We love the way that maths concepts are introduced in such a playful way through shopping, eating, sports, a birthday party and other familiar situations. Many of the concepts are introduced by Romeo the dog who particularly enjoys drawing shapes. The interactivity of the tasks combined with the colourful illustrations promote the idea that as well as being fun, maths is also useful in our everyday lives.
The Farm and Numbers are great for stimulating conversation, both at home and in an early years classroom. The books include vehicles, animals and a colourful cast of characters who make learning fun in a non didactic way.
