Our Tree - Story Snug

Our Tree by Jessica Meserve

Our Tree is a beautifully illustrated celebration of community, tolerance and new friendships. It introduces readers to a variety of creatures in a forest setting full of care and kindness.

The Story: Squirrel, Little Red, doesn’t want to share Tree with anybody. But kind, patient Tree welcomes everybody from the littlest bugs to birds and animals. After unsuccessfully trying to convince Tree that nobody else is welcome Little Red decides to go and find his very own tree. But when Leopard climbs Tree and tells everybody that it’s hers Little Red knows exactly how to respond to the threat…

We love egotistic Little Red who is determined that he should be the only one to enjoy Tree. We also love the relationship that develops as Tree patiently explains the reasons that various creatures also enjoy spending time with them. But Little Red is not convinced until his unnerving encounter with Leopard helps him realise the importance of kindness and tolerance towards others. We love the way that his reaction to Leopard’s threats leads to him finding a new friend and learning to share.

The gorgeous earthy colours in the illustrations pull us into Little Red’s experience. There are so many different creatures for children to identify, we love the final spread with the bugs in the branches and the different coloured butterflies. We also love Tree’s expressions, they have such a kind face, and the subtle details. Swift flying with his many friends in a heart shape sends a gorgeous message of appreciation and thanks to Tree.

This beautifully illustrated picture book would stimulate a wonderful classroom display with children adding the creatures of their choice to a tree growing on a wall or door. It’s also a great book to encourage counting, colour recognition and could even stimulate a class game of I Spy.
