The Bookshop Dog is a wonderful celebration of the power of books, reading and doggy companionship! Perfect for book lovers of all ages this heartwarming story shows how books can bring a community together.
The Story: Scamper lives with Paige at The Happy Tails Bookshop. He wants to help Paige so he finds a way to bring books to her regular customers, Miss Castellano, Mr Ackermann and little boy, Huan. He also wants to find a book for Paige but she seems to have read everything. He decides to ask the customers for their help but can’t find them. Disillusioned Scamper returns to the shop where he gets a wonderful surprise…
We absolutely love Scamper, a slightly insecure little dog, who wants to be just like Paige and help people find books. As the story unfolds Scamper finds books that help change his friends’ lives for the better and lead to a wonderful sense of community in the bookshop. We love the spread at the end where everybody comes together, inspired by the books that Scamper has chosen.
We love the bright, busy illustrations, and the animal puns in the book titles made us smile – Mansfield Bark, Nineteen Eighty Paw and A Tale of Two Kitties. Although not specifically mentioned in the text Paige’s distraction about bills becomes more and more noticeable in the illustrations until Scamper’s actions help her get rid of her worries and realise why she started the shop.

The Bookshop Dog can stimulate classroom discussions about favourite books and inspire children to find a book that a classmate or friend might like to read. It could encourage children to share their favourite books and introduce new titles to their friends.
