Mouse & Mole What Might Have Been includes three, beautifully illustrated short stories that are perfect for bridging the gap between picture books and longer chapter books. We love the way that Mouse and Mole deal with the everyday experiences of a rainy day and being ill as well as Mole’s kite flying contemplations.
These gentle stories turn familiar everyday experiences into adventures as Mouse and Mole solve various problems while enjoying each other’s friendship.

A Rainy Day
After several days of rain Mouse and Mole go outside to try and tell the rain to stop. Rain dances and hugging the rain don’t work but their attempt to become friends with the rain leads to a surprising result!
We love the way that the friends work together and the illustrations of them in their colourful raincoats are adorable!

Atishoo
When Mouse has a cold Mole decides to take care of him. But after making sure that Mouse’s breakfast tastes good, checking the contents of a comic and trying out Mouse’s bath Mole is in need of care himself.
We laughed at the way Mole got distracted by his attempts to help Mouse. All his actions are done in good grace but lead to an unwanted consequence!

What Might Have Been
While flying their kite, Mole contemplates what it would be like to be a different kind of creature including a lark, a dolphin and a monkey. Mouse kindly supports his friend through his thought process until Mole comes to a conclusion that he’s happy with.
We love the way that Mouse points out the problems behind Mole’s reasoning until the kite blowing off the cliff helps Mole answer his own questions about his identity.

The stories also include other woodland animals – Rat and Squirrel. We love the way that simple everyday events are turned into adventures as Mouse and Mole enjoy each other’s company and we adore James Mayhew’s whimsical illustrations which complement the simple easy to read text.
