The Hot Cross Bunny is an amusing rhyming story which starts on the Isle of the Great Easter Bunny. Bunny Steve’s attempt to grow an egg to win The Golden Egg Cup leads him into a mad Easter Eve adventure as him and his chicken friend, Nugget, try to stop a rampaging dragon from spoiling Easter.
The Story: It’s Easter Eve and Steve hasn’t managed to grow a chocolate egg all year. With Nugget’s help he decides to try his own egg recipe. By midnight an enormous egg has grown and Steve and Nugget are shocked when a dragon hatches out of it and disappears down the hole into the REAL World. Nugget convinces Steve to go after it and they watch in horror as it eats all the children’s chocolate eggs. But when the two friends bravely face the dragon they get a few surprises…
We love the friendship between Steve and Nugget and their trip to the real world made us laugh. Friendship, stolen chocolate, dragon poop, a jelly bean and a roller-skate lead to a madcap nighttime adventure. But their biggest challenge is to make sure that all the children get Easter eggs before they return to the Isle of the Great Easter Bunny and find out who has won The Golden Egg Cup.
The easy to read rhyming text includes eggcellent eggy wordplay and we love Mark Chambers’ whimsical illustrations which are full of humorous details. Steve and his bunny friends are adorable and we love the expressions on Steve’s face which really capture his emotions. The world that has been created is adorable – the Isle of the Easter Bunny is made up of rolling hills – Easter Egg shaped – and is full of colourful, industrious bunnies.
The Hot Cross Bunny is a fun Easter read which will last much longer than a chocolate egg!
