Blogtour: ‘How to draw Pickle!’ from Kate McLelland’s Isla & Pickle: The Highland Show

Isla and Pickle are an adorable pair created by author / illustrator Kate McLelland and we are delighted to be taking part in their blog tour. Isla & Pickle: The Highland Show, the second picture book in a new series about a feisty little girl, a cheeky Shetland pony and their adventures, will be published on June 21st.

The Story: Isla does her best to prepare Pickle for the Perfect Pony competition at The Highland Show. There is so much to see at the show that she doesn’t notice Pickle wandering towards the cake stall and visiting the cows. When it is time for the competition Pickle looks less than well groomed and once in the ring he interprets the judge’s instructions in his own way.  Will he be able to win the Perfect Pony competition?

Isla and Pickle live on a Scottish island where they get up to all sorts of mischief. Pickle loves escaping from his field and enjoys getting messy! Despite Isla’s best efforts to groom him in this story we love the messes that he gets into, especially with the cake!

Pickle is such an adorable character and we love the way that so much of the humour in the story comes from Kate’s fabulous illustrations. Isla and Pickle are characters that children will easily identify with and they share a strong bond. Isla & Pickle: The Highland Show also introduced my daughter to the concept of highland games and gave us a flavour of Scottish life – we’d love to have tartan wellies like Isla!

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Kate for showing us how to draw Pickle. He looks very well groomed in this picture but you could always add extra mess as Kate has done in the story 🙂

Thank you for showing us how to draw Pickle, Kate. Unfortunately our efforts to draw him weren’t up to a publishable standard! Pickle is such an adorable cheeky character and we look forward to reading more adventures about him and Isla.
