Spyder, the world’s smallest secret agent, is a fabulous, feisty heroine and we love this action packed adventure in which she is assigned to protect a birthday cake from a hungry fly…
The Story: Spyder is excited about Tom Webster’s birthday but then she receives an urgent message from her boss. Hungry Bluebottle is in the house and the birthday cake is in danger. Spyder and Bluebottle engage in a battle of wits that ends with a twist…
Spyder receives instructions from her boss on her mobile phone before packing an interesting set of spy equipment. The chase to stop Bluebottle includes confrontations with the family pet and danger in the family bathroom although Tom’s family are unaware of the epic battle that is taking place to protect his cake. However, despite constant taunting from Bluebottle, Spyder is a professional and although she has a range of devices at her disposal it is her unique talent as a spider that ultimately saves the day.
Matt Carr’s amusing illustrations are full of action and complement the chatty informal text. They include speech bubbles, thought bubbles and jokes, this really is a fun book to read aloud. As a reader you are completely drawn into the story and the characters’ comments and dialogue also help to move the action along at a fast pace. I love the range of expressions on Spyder’s face and my favourite illustration shows her using a newspaper as a disguise! My daughter loves the way that Spyder relaxes with a book, a cup of tea and a biscuit, the book that she has chosen to read is one that we enjoy reading too!
We love the way that this adorable little spider is such a brave heroine but unfortunately not everybody in the story sees her in the same way…
