Rooster Wore Skinny Jeans - Story Snug

Rooster Wore Skinny Jeans by Jessie Miller & Barbara Bakos

Rooster Wore Skinny Jeans is definitely one of the most eye catching picture book titles that we’ve come across. It really invited us to open the book and we weren’t disappointed! Rooster’s story is as funny as the title suggests but it also shows that it takes courage to be yourself, regardless of the reactions of others.

The Story: Rooster orders a pair of skinny jeans but he’s not prepared for the negative reactions from the farmyard animals. After hiding himself away he realises that being himself is more important than caring about what others think so he stands tall and impresses the animals with his confidence. Encouraged by their reaction he goes online to do some more shopping…

Rooster is a flamboyant, self confident character who makes us laugh, especially when he parades around the farmyard in his new jeans and also when he admires himself in the mirror. His confidence takes a knock when he reveals his jeans to the other animals but we love the way that he bounces back and we think that his next fashion purchase is hilarious!

The easy to read rhyming text bounces as flamboyantly as Rooster and we love Barbara Bakos’ illustrations. She has captured Rooster’s over-the-top character by portraying him in some wonderful poses, the cover illustration is a great example! The description of Rooster’s jeans is brilliant and we love the illustration showing him strutting out into the farmyard, the animals’ disbelieving expressions are very funny and we especially like the way that the crow takes his sunglasses off!

Rooster Wore Skinny Jeans would be a wonderful book to use in a Key Stage One classroom to stimulate discussion about how it’s ok to have different ideas from others and that having our own style is important. I can imagine a classroom wall display showing animals dressed up and celebrating their own uniqueness ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Catherine, I love the the sound of this book! There will always be times when we do things that others find different or strange, but we really shouldn’t be scared to be who we are and to follow our quirks. The younger we learn that the better. Give me a rooster in skinny jeans and I bet they’re a hoot!
