Aย friend of mine made me a beautiful diaper cake when I was pregnant. A diaper cake is mostly made up of nappies butย various other baby accessories are included – dummies,ย bibs, washing and babycare accessories etc. We were also givenย two jigsaws and a Rainbow Fish CD.
When my friend announced her pregnancy I wanted to make her something equally special in return. I don’t know if this an original idea, I have never seen a book cake made for a new baby before, but as I like to give books to new babies I decided to try it.
The diaper cake’s base was a jigsaw so I usedย a jigsaw too although the first book in the pileย was a hardback which would have been sturdy enough. Then I stacked up new books that I had bought during my friend’sย pregnancy and my daughter added some of the books that were special to her when she was younger that she doesn’t read any more. The books are a mix of German and English, most of them are board books including concept books which introduce first words and farmyard animals. There’s a book of Christmas stories, a book with an audio CD of children’s songs, a jigsaw book and stories including Peck, Peck, Peck by Lucy Cousins, A Bit Lost by Chris Haughton and a collection of Little Red Tractor stories.
We wrapped our book cake in clear plastic, tied it with ribbons and added two tiny dummies for decoration.
Which books would you include in a book cake for a newborn baby? Which other book related items could you include?
How about making a book cake for International Book Giving Day? You could include one of the International Book Giving Day bookmarks.
