Silly Dizzy Dinosaur is a fun story that introduces children to following instructions, the concept of the book reminds us of Herve Tullet’s Press Here.
The Story: Dizzy is introduced and we are invited to tickle his tummy. Shaking the book to dry him after he falls in a pond makes him dizzy and gives him hiccups. Turning the book gets him out of a tree and we need to kiss him better when he bumps his nose.
Dizzy is a huge, red stegosaurus and he is such a friendly looking dinosaur that you really want to play with him. He is accompanied on each spread by a little red ladybird who isn’t mentioned in the text but often has to fly out of big, clumsy Dizzy’s way.
Although Silly Dizzy Dinosaur is a first picture book my seven year old also enjoys following the instructions. The text is complemented by speech bubbles and enlarged words like Boo, Woah and Crash add emphasis to the actions and encourage the child to communicate with Dizzy. Each double page spread is bright, bold and colourful and Dizzy has some wonderful facial expressions. My daughter loves the picture of him up the tree, I love his expression when he falls out!
Silly Dizzy Dinosaur would be a fun book to include in an Early Years topic on dinosaurs and a great book to read aloud with a class of children. The interactive nature of the story means that children can join in with the actions and could even suggest their own ideas for interacting with Dizzy. It’s also a great first book for preschoolers as it really shows that books and reading can be fun.
