I Want My Daddy! would make a lovely present for Fathers’ Day, it portrays a wonderful relationship between a father and his son.
The Story: Arthur’s castle keeps falling down and he needs his daddy to help him. Daddy helps him fix his castle so that he can play knights but then Arthur falls over. Luckily Daddy is there and suggests a trip to the playground. At the playground they go fishing and Daddy helps Arthur when he catches a monster! Back home Arthur makes a crown for Daddy, the king of his castle, and gives him a big hug.
This lovely story includes knights, castles, monsters and dinosaurs and shows the wonder and fun of imaginative play, Arthur’s castle is made out of a cardboard box and is fixed using Daddy’s castle cement. Two important relationships are portrayed in this story, the close relationship between Arthur and his father and the fact that Daddy is there for Arthur when he needs him. The other relationship is between Arthur and Huffity. Huffity is Arthur’s soft toy dinosaur who is an important part of Arthur’s games in his castle, accompanies him to the park and sits with him while he is fishing.
I love the way that creativity and imagination is encouraged throughout this story. Arthur is encouraged to create his own castle using a box and makes Daddy’s crown himself. Daddy also stimulates Arthur’s imagination while they are fishing when he names the ‘monster’ that they have caught.
I Want My Daddy! is an easy to read story with beautiful illustrations. Arthur and Daddy are mice and throughout the story Arthur is dressed as a knight. We love the illustration with all the mouse families at the park and Daddy and Arthur’s expressions while they are fishing really show how hard they are working to reel their ‘monster’ in. My favourite illustration is of Arthur sitting in his castle making Daddy’s crown and my daughter loves the final spread, the look on Arthur’s face while he is hugging Daddy is adorable.
This is a lovely gentle story about sons and their daddies, a great story for bedtime.
