Tomorrow is Fathers’ Day in Germany so we have been reading all the books that we have given Daddy over the years. One of our favourites is Me and My Dad.
The Story: Daddy Bear wakes little bear up with a kiss and then little bear tells the reader about all the activities that they do together during the day, how daddy looks after him when a storm comes and when s/he is too tired to walk any more. At the end of the story s/he explains that doing things with Daddy is the best thing in the world.
This beautifully illustrated, rhyming book tells the story of a day in the life of a bear and her/his daddy. My daughter thinks that the little bear is a girl but there is no indication as to what sex s/he is. The two bears’ close relationship is evident by the smiles and the laughter in the illustrations and the bears are really cuddly and cute looking. The activities that they do are interspersed with descriptions of how big Daddy is and how little bear wants to be like him one day, little bear’s admiration for Daddy is adorable. Daddy provides a balance between having fun (jumping in puddles) and looking after his child (carrying her/him home when s/he is too tired to walk any more). The soft, muted watercolour illustrations fit this gentle story perfectly and the landscapes provide a beautiful backdrop to the bears’ activities.
Me and My Dad is an adorable, feel good story which is perfect for bedtime and makes a great present for a special daddy.
