Our favourite Christmas Eve story is definitely Stick Man. It’s not immediately obvious that Santa is a part of this story but he comes to Stick Man’s rescue after a series of mishaps and adventures take him far away from his family.
The Story: Stick Man’s amazing adventure starts when a dog picks him up to play with. He is used in many different ways until he ends up on a beach far from home. When he finally ends up in a little girl’s fireplace he rescues Santa who is stuck in the chimney. In return for Stick Man’s help Santa takes him home to the family tree in time for Christmas.
Julia Donaldson’s rhyming text is paired with Axel Scheffler’s wonderful illustrations, it is incredibly clever to illustrate a stick with so many different expressions! There is a feelgood, happy ending to the story which is perfect for Christmas but we read this book all year round and Stick Man often gets quoted when we find a stick in the woods!
Our little men, Christmas and Snowy, chose Stick Man for our Story Snug Advent Calendar. The stick family were made using brown pipe cleaners with wobbly eyes. They look really cute and still sit on my desk!

We’d love to know if you have any recommendations for a Christmas Eve story. We read ‘The Night before Christmas‘ when we are celebrating an English Christmas.
