If you are looking for a traditional retelling of the Christmas story for young children My Very First Christmas Carols is by far our favourite. We bought it for our daughter when she was two and she is already asking when it will be time to get the Christmas book out, this year she was still quoting the story in July! I have also shared this book with a group of children, singing along to the carols actively involves them in the story.
My Very First Christmas Carols has an accompanying CD and the story is told through a combination of narration and song. The CD includes two poems and ten familiar carols sung beautifully by a children’s choir. Alex Ayliffe’s illustrations are bold, bright, colourful and appealing to young children and the book also includes simple sheet music for each carol. We often read and sing the story without the CD, it’s a great way to learn the carols.
Carols on the CD: O Little Town of Bethlehem, Mary Had a Baby, Silent Night, Away in a Manger, The First Nowell, While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks, We Three Kings, O Come, All Ye Faithful, Go Tell It on the Mountain and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
