Book 'Diaper' Cake - Story Snug

A Book Cake For A New Baby

Aย friend of mine made me a beautiful diaper cake when I was pregnant. A diaper cake is mostly made up of nappies butย various other baby accessories are included – dummies,ย bibs, washing and babycare accessories etc. We were also givenย two jigsaws and a Rainbow Fish CD.

When my friend announced her pregnancy I wanted to make her something equally special in return. I don’t know if this an original idea, I have never seen a book cake made for a new baby before, but as I like to give books to new babies I decided to try it.

The diaper cake’s base was a jigsaw so I usedย a jigsaw too although the first book in the pileย was a hardback which would have been sturdy enough. Then I stacked up new books that I had bought during my friend’sย pregnancy and my daughter added some of the books that were special to her when she was younger that she doesn’t read any more. The books are a mix of German and English, most of them are board books including concept books which introduce first words and farmyard animals. There’s a book of Christmas stories, a book with an audio CD of children’s songs, a jigsaw book and stories including Peck, Peck, Peck by Lucy Cousins, A Bit Lost by Chris Haughton and a collection of Little Red Tractor stories.

We wrapped our book cake in clear plastic, tied it with ribbons and added two tiny dummies for decoration.

This is such an awesome idea! I am going to remember this the next time I’m invited to a baby shower.
How about including The Baby’s Catalogue by Janet and Allan Ahlberg? Peepo and Each Peach Pear Plum are beautiful books for babies too.

This is a lovely idea. I think if I was to do something like this I’d include my children’s favourite books as well as my own when I was a child. I’d also include a book for mum, a bar of chocolate, and some bubble bath – to enjoy reading in the bath ๐Ÿ™‚

My daughter did add some of her old books. I love the book for mum idea (although I’m not sure how much time she would have to read it!).

That’s a lovely idea! I wish I’d seen this before my nephew was born! I would put Julia Donaldsons and Dr Seuss books in there for when the baby is older.

Yes, those would be great choices and so many of them are also in board book format too ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh I adore this idea, I bought all of my children books before they were born but never thought to present them like this! Thanks for sharing with #ReadWithMe

We could have made several cakes! There are so many books that we could have chosen, a bath book or a buggy book…
